Swaziland

1967-03

The inaugural Swaziland Open Golf Championship was being planned for introduction to the Southern African golf circuit in 1967.  To be played at the Royal Swazi Spa golf course, it would be the first non-racial event on the professional circuit.

1969-07 A sponsored tournament for non-whites was held each year at Mbabane and in 1969 the winner was Papwa Sewgolum.  It was played over 54 holes.  Papwa’s winning score was 218.   Runner-up on a score of 223 was Cox Hlapo.
1971-04

Notwithstanding the attempt in 1967 to establish a Swaziland Open Championship, it appears that it was not until 1971 that the event was eventually inaugurated.   Important is that it was a non-racial event and that Sewgolum made a strong challenge for the title.  A brief report with the leading scores follows.

1972-03 1972 03:    The second playing of the Swazi Open drew a very strong field with entries from golfers from all over the world and not least from the non-white golfers in South Africa.   The event was won by J Buczek from the US with a score of 270.   The best of the non-white players was Vincent Tshabalala a long way back on 284.   The leading scores were:
