The Open was won by George Fotheringham (315) from A G Gray (320) and J Fotheringham (325). The pity was that Lawrie Waters had not made the trip. There was much pre-championship interest in Cape Town to see how he would match up with Fotheringham. Waters was, however, busy with the construction of the new Johannesburg GC course at Orange Grove and he could not spare the time.
